Most replacement windows are fabricated in a factory far from the home they end up in, then shipped to the installation site. For buyers assessing window replacement Idaho options, a large difference in elevation between fabrication and installation can change the pressure inside a sealed window. Twin Falls is about 3,740 feet above sea level, Pocatello about 4,462 feet, and Montpelier nearly 5,980 feet.
How Elevation Puts Stress on Sealed Glass
A sealed insulating-glass unit contains air or an insulating gas between its panes. That internal pressure is established during fabrication, so moving the unit to a substantially different elevation changes the pressure difference across the glass. At a higher-elevation location, where outside atmospheric pressure is lower, the pressure difference across the sealed unit pushes the panes outward.
BuildingGreen gives a useful example of the scale involved: a 2,000-foot elevation change creates roughly one pound per square inch of added pressure, which works out to about 1,150 pounds of force on each piece of glass in a two-by-four-foot unit. A 2,000-foot elevation difference is therefore large enough to warrant checking the manufacturer’s altitude specifications.
What the Added Force Can Do
Sustained outward pressure bends the panes and loads the edge seal that holds the unit together. Depending on the product and the size of the air gap, that can appear as visible bowing and distorted reflections, added stress on the seal, and seal failure or cracked glass. Because the space between the panes contributes to the unit’s insulating performance, substantial deflection can affect how the assembly performs in service.
Why the Home’s Elevation Needs to Be Checked
A city name alone does not give the installer the exact elevation of the property. Two homes in the same general area can have different elevations, particularly where terrain changes. The installer should confirm the property’s elevation and compare it with the manufacturer’s specifications for the chosen unit before the order is finalized.
This is especially useful when replacing only some of the windows. An older window may also have a different gas fill or a different altitude specification from the replacement unit. Checking the product documentation before ordering gives the installer a chance to resolve those differences before the windows arrive.
How Manufacturers Handle Altitude
Window makers publish altitude limits for their sealed units, and the remedy above those limits is a specific one. Andersen, for example, specifies capillary breather tubes for certain installations above its listed altitude limits. Its documentation says this configuration removes the argon blend and produces a small reduction in thermal performance, with the U-factor increasing by about 0.02. These limits are product-specific, so the elevation that requires pressure equalization on one window line may differ from another.
That leaves a high-elevation buyer with two possible configurations:
- A sealed unit kept within the manufacturer’s altitude limit for the installation site, which retains its gas fill and rated performance.
- A unit fitted with a capillary breather tube, which relieves the pressure but gives up the argon fill and a small amount of thermal performance.
What a Homeowner Can Ask
A buyer does not need to calculate the pressure difference, but the property’s elevation should be discussed with the installer. A short conversation about the home’s altitude, the manufacturer’s limit for the chosen product, and whether a breather tube applies will settle whether the window on the quote belongs in the wall. For homes at higher elevations, that check belongs alongside decisions about the glass package and frame material.
Nu-Vu operates showrooms in Twin Falls, Burley, Pocatello, and Montpelier, giving its crews experience with window installations across Idaho’s varied elevations. The company also provides free in-home measurements. Homes at higher elevations can avoid a mismatch by having the site measured and the window specifications checked before ordering.
